Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2023.
The aesthetic experience of looking at art is a way of engaging with oneself through images that come from outside the self and can profoundly affect consciousness. Dreams, too, present the waking self with compelling images that can seem to come from another source. Although the relevance of dream images to psychological development has been extensively explored, the use of art in psychology has mostly been limited to creating art, rather than viewing existing art. This thesis uses heuristic as well as traditional and alchemical hermeneutic methodologies to explore the research question of how aesthetic experience may be psychologically analogous to dreaming, and thus potentially be used in depth-oriented psychotherapy as a sort of waking dreamwork to support both psychological balance in the present and the longer-term individuation process.
