Thesis (Ph.D.)--Lehigh University, 2005.
Although there is a growing empirical literature on compensation, there has been little empirical assessment of incentive provision for workers (Prendergast, 1999). Further, the role of prizes in providing incentives has been largely ignored in the team sports literature. This dissertation analyzes several incentive mechanisms in use in both minor and major league baseball. Chapter 2 uses data from minor league baseball to examine the incentives provided by the hierarchical structure of the sport. Minor league baseball players are not positively motivated by the salary at their major league affiliate, and some players may be demotivated. Baseball players seem to increase their effort in response to being traded. Players promoted to triple A baseball appear to reduce their effort in response to this promotion. Single A players, on the other hand, appear to react positively to a promotion. Chapter 3 uses data from Major League Baseball to examine the effect of pay dispersion on several measures of success. Pay compression has a positive impact on a wide range of measures of team success perhaps as it encourages cooperation, team harmony and morale. The way a baseball league is structured has important implications for the provision of incentives. The traditional baseball league has two divisions, with the winner of each meeting in the championship series. However, many minor leagues play a split season where the winner of the first half of the season plays the winner of the second half of the season for the championship. Chapter 4 uses data from double A baseball and finds that teams playing in traditional leagues exert effort over a longer period of time than teams in split season leagues. More teams in traditional leagues exert effort to catch the leader, whilst more teams in split season leagues reduce their effort when they fall behind the leader in the second half of the split season. Overall, this dissertation shows that the provision of incentives in team sports does have important effects on the participants (individuals and teams). The results have important policy implications for the organizers of baseball and for the owners of teams.
