Thesis (D.M.A.)--Shenandoah University, 2024.
Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifteen Variations and a Fugue on an Original Theme, Op. 35, better known as the Eroica Variations, stands as a monumental work and has drawn the attention of performers for generations. The theme, which Beethoven came back to again and again, exists in four of his works from 1800-1803: 12 Contredanses for Orchestra, WoO 14, his successful ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43, Fifteen Variations and a Fugue on an Original Theme, Op. 35, and his Symphony No. 3, Op. 55 'Eroica.' Beethoven may have associated himself with the mythological character of Prometheus, who stole fire from the Gods and brought culture to humanity. Whatever the reason, Beethoven continued to develop his 'Prometheus' theme until he had exhausted the developmental potential of the theme to its fullest. The Op. 35 Variations contain elements not seen before in the variation form, and Beethoven expands it to the degree of a large-scale form. This project provides practical suggestions for a performer to understand and overcome Op. 35's notable difficulty, due to technical challenges and the sheer breadth of the form itself. I analyze the compositional structure, explore Beethoven's use of the two themes and delve into the importance of the C minor key area to provide insights for performers on how to craft the necessary pacing and narrative arc to convey the work's artistic depth and complexity. From a stylistic point of view, I explore the nuances of historical performance practice, emphasizing the importance of understanding articulation and notation in enabling performers to unlock new realms of expressive possibilities within Beethoven's music. I also provide technical suggestions including those of fingerings and hand redistribution in key passages that reduce technical strain and exercises for practicing technical mastery of the most difficult sections.
