Thesis (Ph.D.)--Keiser University, 2024.
Law enforcement officers are tasked with the difficult job to serve and protect the public, which has proven to be an especially taxing career on these individuals. Although there is evidence-based research showing the effects of stress on law enforcement, there is a lack of research focusing on law enforcement resiliency and their handling of the current political climate post-COVID-19 and "Summer of Love" (post-George Floyd protests). These two phenomena are not only recent in their effects on law enforcement officers but are unique in a rise in public distrust and dealing with a pandemic simultaneously. The instruments used in this study were the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, 10 item (CD-RISC-10; Broche-Perez et al., 2022), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet, 2016), and the Perceived Stress Scale, 10 item (PSS-10; Smith & Emerson, 2014). Participants included law enforcement officers who worked in various parts of the country (rural, urban, and suburban) of various ranks, gender, and age (N = 115). The results indicated that the relationship between resiliency and social support was statistically significant. However, the relationship between resiliency and stress as well as social support and stress were not statistically significant. Additional findings include a significant moderating effect of gender on resiliency and stress. These findings indicated law enforcement resiliency may have other strong factors that are not fully researched, but social support remains a significant factor. Findings also indicated that there were aside from gender, there were no moderating effects of demographic variables (age, rank, or population type) and their effects on resiliency and stress.
