The goal of this project report is to offer solutions for music educators and students to the many problems that beginning oboe players encounter in the early stages of development. Students rarely begin their musical career on the oboe; they traditionally shift from another woodwind instrument. When a student begins their transition to the oboe, they are generally left to discover how to play this difficult instrument alone. This paper covers these topics: oboe history, selecting a successful student for the oboe, technique, embouchure comparison between the oboe and other woodwind instruments, reeds, and oboe scales and exercises. The materials, references and techniques herein will aid music educators in the instruction of the oboe, as well as assist in building and maintaining a successful oboe program for their ensembles.
