The field of Emotional Intelligence (EI) research has gained popularity in business and industry and educational settings. EI literature and contributions from recent graduate studies classify it as a contributing factor to academic outcomes and adult performance. Evidence suggests that a positive relationship exists between leaders' emotions and success within the workplace. Ideally, leaders create positive working relationships, empower those they strive to lead, and engage followers in organizational goals. Although EI is widely discussed, there is uncertainty when it comes to the impact on school outcomes. This quantitative study explored the self-reported EI skills among Arizona secondary school principals based on ADE's school profile rank outlined by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE).The following research question guided this quantitative study, does self-reported EI skills among Arizona secondary school principals differ based on ADE's school profile rank? This EI study targeted secondary principals of schools ranked Excelling, Highly Performing Performing Plus, Performing, Underperforming, and Failing to Meet Academic Standards by the ADE. The study was conducted through a quantitative design, and the Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso (2004) EI Test (MSCEIT) was used to examine EI scores for Arizona secondary school principals. The outcomes of the EI study clarified effective leadership skills that influence school profile rank within Arizona.
