Thesis (Ph.D.)--Brown University, 1995.
The concept of a hero and heroism is central to Limonov's texts. His poetics--the subject matter, the plots, the tropes--reveal Limonov's peculiar vision of heroism. This study discusses some of the reasons for Limonov's popularity by providing a literary context for his works and tracing the sources of the tradition which his fiction follows, and which have their roots in eighteenth-century fiction. The focus is on those elements in Limonov's writings that reveal his location within the system of Russian literary tradition. These elements fall into the following interdependent but distinct rubrics: Language, genre, the image of the writer, and the image of the hero. Furthermore, this dissertation argues that it is Limonov's poetics of heroism that organize and give order to these rubrics.
