Thesis (M.P.S.)--Pratt Institute, 2023.
The purpose of this art-based study is to gain an understanding of the emotional experience of art therapy group for women experiencing fertility obstacles in a safe therapeutic setting. This study consisted of four one-hour weekly sessions that took place consecutively and were located online. The group of participants were unknown to each other and had limited contact with the researcher before the study began. The use of art therapy gave the participants a method of unconscious expression (Malchiodi, 2003), non-verbal communication, self-analysis and connection to one another through art making. The group setting provided a safe environment where participants' stories were heard, their emotions were validated (Hogan et al., 2021) and their artwork was witnessed. Art directives were carefully developed to focus on different themes and provide participants with a variety of materials enabling them to explore their fertility journeys in a multitude of ways. Themes explored throughout this study include but are not limited to guilt, isolation, control and hope.
