Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2001.
A review of August Strindberg's literary production in most works provides a common list of themes: religion and morals, social criticism, the battle of the sexes, experimentation with the dramatic form. No one to date has claimed that the social, medical, and moral problem of homosexuality, as it was viewed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, consistently appears in Strindberg's works from the beginning to the end of his authorial production. In fact, this dissertation will show not only that Strindberg carefully researched beliefs and theories regarding the causes and effects of homosexuality, but also that by introducing these themes he created an important scientific and social issue for debate. Previous Strindberg scholarship has often either completely ignored these themes, utilized these themes to arrive at inconclusive results regarding Strindberg's own sexuality, or commented on isolated accounts of homosexuality in a particular work. This dissertation seeks instead to map Strindberg's strong interest in homosexuality as a social phenomenon and to show how it arises as a textual theme throughout his works. Topics covered include Strindberg's research on, and polemical use of, homosexuality in his discussions of events and people in history from Greek civilization to his own time; the medical, scientific, psychological, and legal research Strindberg conducted on homosexuality in the 1880's and the debate on the literary results of that research that ensued; the use of experience to lay claim to authority in autobiographical depictions of sodomitic vices; and the post-Inferno shift to the religious exploration of a godless society in order to reveal by example the extent of social decay brought about through sin and vice.
