With reference to Adrian Johnston's conception of "misfelt feelings" in Self and Emotional Life: Philosophy, Psychoanalysis, and Neuroscience (2013), this study examines melancholy and one of its specific manifestations, emotional mistranslation, in Flannery O'Connor's works. This thesis argues that the divergence of the subjective evaluation of a feeling from the feeling's original psychological and neuroscientific attributes, which is especially notable in the melancholic subject susceptible to affective dysfunction, can give rise to emotional mistranslation on the melancholic subject's part. In other words, since both psychoanalysis and neuroscience inform us that humans first process and perceive emotions and feelings unconsciously, emotions and feelings are prone to misrecognition, which can further lead to distorted cognition and behaviors; the melancholic subject, by confusing the nature of a negative feeling, attributing it to a different cause, or diminishing the feeling's intensity, can misperceive and mistranslate his feeling states, and eventually neglect his emotional problems. Flannery O'Connor's works are especially pertinent to the illumination of this mental phenomenon. O'Connor's works are remarkable for a masqueraded melancholy misunderstood by her literary characters and herself. Her characters exhibit general symptoms of depression and melancholia (manic-depression), yet they vehemently deny their mental pathology, and moreover mistranslate sadness, grief and guilt as hatred and pride. Such a mistranslation is manifested on three levels. Firstly, O'Connor's melancholic figures substitute sadness with either emotional withdrawal or narcissistic omnipotence in their verbal output, with a consequence of linguistic self-deception and decommunication. Secondly, they dismiss corporeal emotions signaling melancholy to be insignificant sensations, thereby resulting in faulty self-judgment and even detrimental decision-making. Thirdly, they mistranslate feelings of loss as hostility through projecting them onto doubling figures, invented enemies and personified nature. Additionally, composing a discourse of disguised melancholy, O'Connor herself also shows considerable emotional mistranslation in regard to her artistic anxiety and health concerns. Scrutinizing the nature of melancholic feelings and its mistranslations in O'Connor's works, this thesis underscores the indispensability of a deepened understanding of emotional feelings in the study of melancholy in literature and culture.
