Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 2024.
This dissertation examines the relationship between firms' communication and actions regarding social and environmental issues. Through three chapters, I propose to integrate various formats of communication, the channels of communication, and the constitutive role of communications in analyzing firms' strategy, communications, and behaviors in this domain. Specifically, the first chapter explores how the framing of sustainability rationality, a non-standardized form of communication, has impacts on sustainability implementation. The second chapter focuses on the channel of firms' responsible communication, emphasizing that the expectations of audiences associated with channels influence firms' information withholding. The third chapter suggests risk identification as a catalyst for driving firms towards substantial actions in carbon emission reduction. Collectively, this dissertation contributes to the existing conversations by highlighting the variety of organizational communications in this domain that goes beyond information delivery and by underscoring the dual role of communication as both strategic and constrained.
