Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Stanislaus, 2023.
This thesis explores the impact of seasonal fluctuations and varying incubation temperatures on grunion fish (Leuresthes tenuis) embryo survival and hatching success, drawing from field collections conducted at Topanga Beach, Los Angeles County. The study reveals that extreme temperatures of 34 and 38 °C yield negligible embryo survival, contrasting with higher survival rates at cooler temperatures of 18 and 22 °C exhibit prolonged viability into a second tidal cycle. Seasonal analyses unravel distinctive survival patterns, unveiling higher survival rates among spring embryos in cooler incubation temperatures. Conversely, summer and late summer embryos demonstrate variable survival rates across temperatures, emphasizing the interplay between seasonality and temperature on grunion fish embryo resilience. Hatching success reveals limited seasonal impact but profound sensitivity to temperature fluctuations. Morphological observations underscore temperature-induced timelines for potential hatch readiness. This study underscores the critical need for metabolic data under climate change conditions, essential for formulating conservation strategies to safeguard these species amidst shifting environmental conditions.
