Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilkes University, 2023.
This qualitative case study focused on the eighth and ninth grade teachers in one public school district's English language arts (ELA) department who taught LGBTQ+-inclusive literature as part of the core ELA curriculum. The purpose of the study was to understand their perspectives and experiences. Review of the literature indicated a need for the inclusion of LGBTQ+-voices in the secondary ELA curriculum and identified a gap in research specifically studying the incorporation of LGBTQ+-inclusive literature in the core ELA curriculum. Semi-scripted questions guided by Kumashiro's anti-oppressive education theoretical framework were used in one-on-one interviews to gather data on the process of choosing, incorporating, and teaching LGBTQ+-inclusive curriculum. Initial findings from the interviews supported the creation of follow-up questions for a focus group which included four of the original participants. After the focus group, data were analyzed to discover significant themes. These themes included the importance of school culture, the relevance and literary merit of LGBTQ+-inclusive literature, the impact on student engagement and learning, the awareness of the teacher, and the need for choice and reflection. Research findings suggest that secondary ELA departments can successfully incorporate LGBTQ+-inclusive literature in the core ELA curriculum, resulting in a more inclusive experience for all students.
