The major reason for studying abroad for international students has been a better educational opportunity (Smith & Khawaja, 2011) as well as improving their English skills to increase the opportunities to have a successful career in the future (Chan et al., 2021; Tang et al., 2018). However, they also desire to interact with domestic students or local people in the host country to explore different cultures and expand their cultural knowledge (Bennett, 2012; Chan et al., 2021). Interacting with other international students who have different cultural backgrounds facilitates international students' growth in global perspectives through learning about different cultures besides that of the U.S. and their own (Bennett, 2012; Hendrickson, 2018), which promotes intercultural competence development. This study used a case study to investigate international students' intercultural interactions with other students in class discussions at higher educational institutions in the U.S. and their effects on intercultural learning and the development of intercultural competence. International undergraduate students' voices were shared via semi-structured interviews and their behaviors were observed during in-class activities. The study found that there is a discrepancy in how international and host-national students perceive each other working in groups, which influences negatively their interactions and forming friendships. In addition, international students learned about different cultures through classroom activities yet there were not enough opportunities to share their cultural perspectives.
