The purpose of this literature-based study was to develop a rationale, a theoretic framework, and generate a clinical program proposal based on research regarding the impact of visual stimuli via the mass media and technology on an adolescent population, adolescent development, and also the use of art therapy to treat adolescents. This includes the development of a proposal for art therapy treatment for adolescents who have grown up and developed within a technologically-advanced society. Normal developmental issues, as well as issues that arise due to the effects of technology and mass media on adolescents were considered in the development of treatment approaches.Current and historical literature regarding the effects of adolescents interacting with visual mass media, adolescent development, and adolescent art therapy was compiled, organized, and categorized into tables in order to discover predominant themes as well as identify where these themes complement each other. A proposal indicating how art therapy may be used to treat adolescents considering the effects of visual mass media on this population was developed through analysis of these tables. The results of this literature-based study indicate that mass media is becoming more visually-oriented and less verbal, thus shifting the intelligence of youth who interact with this media in the same direction. Since it also employs visual images to communicate, it is suggested that art therapy may be an especially effective treatment for these youth.
