Thesis (Ed.D.)--Texas A&M University - Texarkana, 2023.
Students spend multiple days a year sitting down and taking standardized assessments. One of the ways the federal and state governments use these assessments and scores is to evaluate and grade school districts. To increase student performance on those standardized assessments, schools are allocating less time to physical activity and more time to their content areas. Research shows students are also spending less time being physically active outside of school. This combination has helped contribute to problems for students, such as mental health issues, physical ailments, and problems in the classroom. The idea that an individual is influenced by their environment and the people they are around is a main tenet of Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory and Urie Bronfenbrenner's social ecological model. The quantitative quasi-experimental study included 296 students from the 2021-2022 school year and consisted of 9th and 10th grade students from a rural high school in Northwest Arkansas. An independent samples t-test was used to determine if there was any significance between the group of students who participated in a physical education class and those who did not participate in a physical education class. The study found no statistically significant difference in ACT Aspire test scores between the two groups of students. The researcher recommends school districts not cut time spent in physical education classes because this study and other research shows students are not negatively impacted by participating in physical activity. Future research should include true experimental designs with specific physical education programs.
