Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in swimmers can contribute to shoulder overuse injuries. Tart cherry juice (TCJ) and foam rolling (FR) could help mitigate DOMS. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether TCJ and FR attenuate DOMS in competitive adolescent swimmers. METHODS: All 9 participants (aged 14.5±2.5 years) were randomized to four groups. All participants consumed 16 ounces of TCJ or placebo daily and completed a daily muscle soreness diary. Individuals in the FR group and TCJ/FR group also completed a daily FR protocol. On days 0 and 7, all participants' internal range of motion (ROM), external ROM, horizontal adduction ROM, and pain pressure threshold (PPT) on the foam rolled muscles were measured. RESULTS: No statistically significant results could be determined. The statistical analysis did not calculate a required minimum change in ROM. A PPT change of ±1.4kg to ±1.9kg is significant. CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between TCJ, FR, and DOMS in swimmers remains unclear.
