Thesis (Ph.D.)--Widener University, 2022.
Research suggests that marriage and family therapists (MFT) leave their training programs unprepared to discuss sex and sexuality with clients (Carlson et al., 2013; Metzl, 2013; Rivers & Swank, 2017; Rutter et al., 2010). Despite recommendations from accrediting boards to include sexuality content (COAMFT, 2017), program faculty are often unprepared to effectively teach this content (Winston & Piercy, 2010; Zamboni & Zaid, 2017) and currently, no guidelines exist for how to approach these topics in the classroom (Edwards et al., 2014; Timm, 2009). Some challenges to including sexuality content are lack of training for university staff, lack of clear guidelines and curriculum, and topic discomfort on the part of both student and teacher (Metzl, 2013; Winston & Piercy, 2010; Zamboni & Zaid, 2017). This study interviewed 12 faculty who develop and teach sexuality classes in COAMFT-accredited MFT programs in order to better understand the factors that they experience as challenging and supporting the implementation of sexuality content. Thematic analyses suggest that student feedback and faculty/administrative support were the most influential as both supports and challenges. Faculty reported craving more overall support and community, more training for all faculty, and documented systemic approaches to sexuality content. Sexuality content is one area that is lacking in overall support and attention. Giving it attention is in service to the progress of our field, our collective growth as therapists, and our clients.
