This thesis uses archival material-photographs, paintings, and prints-to recreate both queer identity and subcultures within nineteenth-century Paris. Chapter 1 looks at the invasive photographs taken by Nadar of an intersex patient and considers the lasting impact of such imagery on Western medical history. Chapter 2 traces the multifaceted history of Sappho within French visual narrative and argues that she her dominant iconography shifts from a venerated, yet suicidal figure to a voracious, yet sexualized lesbian figure. Finally, Chapter 3 uses lithographs from the weekly newspaper, Gil Blas Illustre, to explore how the masculine woman dominated lesbian imagery of Montmartre. Though disparate in topic, each chapter delves into the question: how can scholars use archives to delve into LGBTQIA+ communities of the past?
