Suzanne Valadon's identity as a lower-class female, acrobat, artist's model, mother, wife, and artist is inextricably tied to her artistic production. In examining her depictions of the female nude, we must not only consider Valadon's identity but also those of her sitters. Through the inclusion of the models' names in her titles and a consistent rendering of their unique physical features across series, Valadon conveys her models' identities to the viewer. Informed by her previous vocations as acrobat and artist's model, Valadon utilized the female nude - a genre wherein models were often anonymized and valued solely for their physical form - as a means of presenting her sitters as women whose bodies existed beyond the canvas and not simply for the viewer's pleasure. Because Valadon's approach to the female nude was informed by factors sometimes personal, historical, or both, we must approach each work in the same way she depicted her models - as individuals.
