Thesis (M.A.)--San Diego State University, 2023.
As young people develop a sense of self and recognize their differences from their peers, there comes a desire to find meaning in life outside of the mundane. Interwoven into the code of the modern generation, social media offers a form of escape for users away from their daily lives. An emerging trend in this online environment presents the opportunity to take agency over the idiosyncrasies of one's daily life by romanticizing them in a way that makes taking on the day more palatable. The present study employs the visual and textual analysis of a set of 30 social media posts from TikTok, an audiovisual platform with propulsive influence over the virality of this trend via the creators who seek to share their stories. The visual and textual analysis serves to identify common themes in the user-generated content as it relates to the romanticization trend. The content of the posts is analyzed through the lens of main character syndrome, escapism, and aesthetic as they are implemented by each individual user. The selection and analysis of these elements contributes to the intended goal of interpreting the motivations of the creators to participate in the aforementioned trend. Ultimately, defining what makes someone the "main character" in a life they have curated from a near fantastical viewpoint.{A0}
