Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2023.
This study explored how artificial intelligence (AI) can support teachers in reflecting on and improving their course design. Interviews were conducted with two university instructors after they interacted with an AI-powered dashboard visualizing relationships between course content, assessments, and student work. Thematic analysis revealed three key affordances of AI for teacher reflection:First, AI can facilitate objective, action-oriented reflection once initial scrutiny establishes trust. Without AI, teachers engaged in critical but resigned reflection. With the dashboard, they adopted a more trusting, objective stance and articulated specific intentions to act on its insights, moving from reflection to action. However, blind trust in AI is concerning. Designing transparent systems that convey uncertainty and limitations can help calibrate appropriate trust.Second, AI enables flexible, real-time queries of student data through natural language interfaces. Teachers wanted to access analytics in-the-moment to aid reflection and decision-making. This points to AI's potential for augmenting teachers' analytic abilities. However, risks around data privacy necessitate careful data management design. More research is needed on the impacts of computational augmentation for teachers. Finally, AI can perform social monitoring and assistance comparable to in-person teaching. This ability may help close the social gap teachers feel with online students. However, ethical questions around privacy, equity, and the proper role of AI in education must be addressed through critical research and human-centered design.
