In the Republic, Socrates posits the tripartition of the soul and the Divided Line. While much is made of each of these ideas separately, there have only been limited attempts to show how the parts of the soul relate to the subsections of the Divided Line. In bridging these two ideas, I argue that the cognitive activities one pursues are intimately tied to the relative harmony between the parts of one's soul. In the first chapter, I look in depth at the tripartition of the soul and how the parts of the soul are structured in the classes of individuals in the ideal city and in the character of the individuals in the degenerate constitutions. I argue that the parts as discussed in Republic IV are, in themselves, incomplete but the types of individuals discussed throughout the Republic show various ways that the parts can be developed through education. In the second chapter, I turn to the metaphysical and epistemological core of the Republic to analyze how the range of epistemic activities detailed in the Divided Line are constitutive of cognition, along with the object of cognition. To that end, I examine how images, despite their ontological deficiencies for Socrates, can be directed to the Forms through the epistemic activity of the knower. In the third chapter, I connect Socrates' moral psychology to his metaphysics and epistemology. I argue that each of the parts of the soul has certain general ways of cognizing along the four subsections of the Divided Line. I find, however, that the parts of the soul are insufficient to truly express how the individual cognizes. For this reason, I examine how the range of individuals - due to the varying degrees of harmony (and disharmony) between the parts of their soul - focus their cognition at different levels of the Divided Line. I conclude by developing some reflections from my argument in defense of imitative poetry in response to Socrates' challenge in Republic X.
