Thesis (Ph.D.)--Grand Canyon University, 2023.
The purpose of the qualitative descriptive study was to explore how former gang members in the United States describe their transition from gang membership to entrepreneurial leadership. The target population was former gang members in the United States who are successful entrepreneurs now. The research used quantitative and qualitative surveys and one-on-one semi-structured interviews as instruments. The four RQs answered were: 1) How do former gang members describe their level of entrepreneurial traits and their entrepreneurial tendencies? 2) How do former gang members describe their entrepreneurial tendencies, demonstrated as a gang member, led them to success as a gang member? 3) How do former gang members describe their entrepreneurial tendencies, demonstrated as a gang member, led them to transition to become a successful entrepreneurial leader? 4) How do former gang members describe the role opportunity plays in their successful transition to entrepreneurship? Data analysis used descriptive statistics, thematic analysis, and a descriptive summary to answer the problem statement. The phenomenon in this study refutes earlier perspectives arguing that leadership could rarely be between organizations or professions. The theoretical framework, the psychology of entrepreneurial theories, provides two seminal studies. The implication is that former gang members, now successful Entrepreneurial Leaders, demonstrated strengths in categories measuring enterprising tendencies and entrepreneurship psychology compared to similar studies.{A0}{A0}
