The Great Pied Hornbill is a large frugivorous bird of the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats of southern India. Heavy destruction of its native forest habitat, along with poaching of adults and squabs from nests over the past few decades, have been coincident with declines in numbers and range of this species. It is officially declared an endangered species. I collected baseline information on the ecological requirements for hornbill survival. Measurement and analysis of nest site characteristics at 24 nests indicated the overwhelming importance of large trees for nesting. A quantification of the foraging habitat by characterizing 20 fig trees used by the hornbill for foraging showed that large fig trees were essential for providing ideal foraging opportunity for the hornbill. The nesting and foraging habitat study showed the hornbills' dependence on pristine, undisturbed and mature stands of wet forests with large trees. I also investigated patterns of availability of hornbill fruit resources, by monitoring fruiting phenology of preferred tree species. Lipid-rich, nutritious fruits of the type produced by deep forest trees, were very seasonal in their availability, and their production coincided with the breeding season of the hornbill. Sugar-rich fruits, represented mainly by figs (Ficus), were available year round, because of the aseasonality and asynchrony of ripe fig production by the Ficus taxa. Ficus fruited at times of overall fruit scarcity, was preferred heavily by the Great Pied Hornbill and a vast array of other frugivores, and thus played a keystone role in the maintenance of hornbills and the frugivorous community. A study of the hornbill's breeding biology also showed the importance of figs in the diet of hornbills in the breeding season. Management steps for the conservation of the Great Pied Hornbill should include protecting mature stands of wet evergreen forest, identifying and monitoring traditional nest sites, protecting and propagating fig trees, enforcing anti-poaching laws, controlling honey collection that is in conflict with hornbill nesting, and promoting tribal awareness through education, ecotourism, and the involvement of tribal people in future research projects on the hornbill.
