Thesis (Ph.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2010.
Although pilgrimage has occurred throughout human history, creative inquiry into the psychological factors underlying pilgrims' motivations is largely unexplored. My transdisciplinary inquiry explores the call to pilgrimage and the significance of the archetypal labyrinth as a mandala utilizing a Jungian framework, in that the images, metaphors, and symbols of pilgrimage are embedded in the collective unconscious and have meaning for individual consciousness. My study employs a dominant disciplinary discourse of depth and transpersonal psychology and investigates psycho-spiritual aspects of pilgrimage, embracing the realms of dreams, synchronicities, visions, reveries, intuition, or other indirect ways of knowing. I posit that pilgrimage stems from humanity's sense of separation from divinity, with pilgrims engaging in ritualistic behaviors that bring wholeness to the Self, as defined by Jung, through approaching the Divine. My premise is that pilgrimage entails different forms of supplication to that which is conceived as divine in historical, cultural, and/or religious contexts, aiding humankind to bridge the psychological gap between the profane and the sacred. My method is to use narrative analysis with hermeneutical content to interpret and illuminate the meaning of texts and non-textual stories told through imagery and artistic expression. The focus of the inquiry is on the Western tradition of pilgrimage in Europe, from the pagan rituals of antiquity, with my personal sojourn to pilgrim sites in ancient Greece, to the medieval experience of Catholic Christendom, with my journey as a modern pilgrim to Chartres Cathedral in France.
