Thesis (M.S.)--Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 2023.
Higher education institutions play a critical role in a student's character development and growth. During the four years of college, student-athletes will shape their character, encounter different sorts of experiences, and achieve practical and liberal gains, while dealing with stress. Student-athletes have to balance their athletic identity as well, and hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived stress levels, educational gains, and experiences of student-athletes and to examine the difference between gender, class standing, and academic levels. The survey was sent out to all student-athletes at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. 204 student-athletes successfully completed the survey by answering the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Student-Athlete Experience Inventory (SEI), and Student-Athlete Gains Inventory (SGI). The results showed there was a statistically significant difference between freshmen and seniors and graduate students in liberal arts gains, stating that the older students had more soft skills. In addition, females had significantly higher perceived stress than males. The study demonstrated no significant difference between higher and lower grade point averages. Since most statistical analyses demonstrated a non-significant result, the study concludes that there is not a major difference between the individual student-athlete and their respective educational gains, experiences, and perceived stress levels. Directions for future research are given at the end of the paper.
