Thesis (Ph.D.)--Grand Canyon University, 2024.
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how paramedics and EMTs in the United States describe their stress and coping experiences with critical incidents in the workplace. The transactional model of stress and coping served as the theoretical foundation for the study, forming two research questions. First, how do paramedics and EMTs describe their stress experiences in critical incidents? Second, how do paramedics and EMTs describe their coping experiences with critical incidents? Convenience sampling via online message boards produced 46 participants, self-selected into mutually exclusive groups where 16 participants completed interviews and 30 participants completed open-ended questionnaires. Yin's five-phase thematic analysis was utilized, yielding 12 themes. Findings described the participants' stress and coping experiences. Two salient themes, change in stress due to patient/bystander population characteristics and effects of second-guessing from self or management, described characteristics of patients or bystanders that altered the stress experience of the critical incidents and participants' coping process as hindered by internal and external second-guessing actions. This study concluded that paramedics and EMTs describe their stress and coping experiences to include elevated stress levels on the scene due to the actions of bystanders and families and recognized the support or lack thereof from their teammates and agencies. Recommendations for future research include studies to investigate EMS professionals' experiences of media reporting on critical incidents. Recommendations for future practice include development of a structured peer support network that meets regularly.
