Despite a reduction in the adolescent unintended pregnancy rate, the United States continues to have one of the highest rates among all developed countries. Unintended adolescent pregnancy contributes to maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, and has a significant impact on society. Current contraceptive counseling strategies ignore patient preferences, values, and needs, which are key components in patient-centered healthcare. With patient-centered contraceptive services, women are more satisfied with their family planning visits, are more likely to use contraception, and have higher rates of contraceptive continuation. The promoting action on research implementation in health services (PARiHS) translational framework was utilized to guide this evidence-based project that incorporated a patient-centered, contraceptive decision-making support tool into the contraceptive counseling process for adolescents in three county health department in Oklahoma. Over eight weeks, adolescent females, aged 15 to 19 years old, presenting to these clinics were given the opportunity to utilize the tool and the providers were able to incorporate the patient preferences, values, and needs into their contraceptive counseling. An increase in knowledge of patient-centered care and familiarity with decision-making support tools was seen with this project. The participants reported the tool was easy to use, helped the patients select a contraceptive method, made their contraceptive counseling more efficient, and improved the patient-provider interaction.
