In recent years, the proliferation of mobile dating apps has transformed the ways that emerging adults pursue and initiate intimate relationships. While the media has often depicted apps as merely perpetuating a "hook-up" culture, recent research demonstrates that emerging adults have diverse motivations for their app use. The current study utilized a qualitative approach to examine the experiences of emerging adults, ages 26-to-30-years-old, who use mobile dating apps to establish a romantic relationship. Nine emerging adults participated in semi-structured interviews that explored their dating app experiences and their perceptions of the impact of their app use on their desired romantic outcomes. Participants' narratives were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) and fourteen themes emerged that elucidated today's complex dating world. Results indicated that apps undoubtedly provide access to a larger dating pool and increased dating opportunities for emerging adults. Nevertheless, the findings also suggested that using dating apps is often an arduous process due to the pressures of creating a desirable self-presentation, the shifting dating norms on apps (e.g., ghosting), and the disappointment and self-doubt that may arise from app use. Clinically, this study sheds light on the unique relational opportunities and obstacles of dating app use. The implications of these findings and recommendations for future research are presented.
