This dissertation studies environmental politics and policy in the United States, with a focus on the relationship between policy and the private sector. In the first chapter, I analyze a form of voluntary environmental programs by the private sector, showing that although the most environmentally-friendly firms tend to participate in these initiatives, there is no actual change in behavior. In the second chapter, co authored by Hye Young You, we propose a novel channel of influence from special interest to federal environmental regulation that goes through state environmental agencies and participation in federal litigation cases. In the last chapter, I depart from most literature on the value of political connections and use the fracking revolution as a regulatory shock to analyze special interest political mobilization in a context of plausibly exogenous increases in the regulatory burden. These three essays focus on different areas in which the private sector can affect environmental regulation and its outcomes, and could provide useful insights for further research in the fight against climate change.
