The problem is that barriers and challenges prevent those in Black, indigenous, and person of color (BIPOC) communities from entering and remaining in the public health workforce. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of BIPOC members of the public health workforce with respect to entering and remaining in the workforce. Existing literature did not include exploration of perceptions or beliefs of BIPOC individuals in the health care or public health fields regarding the barriers they face. Transformational leadership theory formed the theoretical framework. Interviews with BIPOC public health professionals in a local urban health department yielded data to answer the research questions, which addressed the preconceptions participants held regarding leadership, the perceived value of diversity, barriers to entering the workforce, and barriers to remaining in the workforce. The number of BIPOC professionals employed at the research site was approximately 40, and 15 agreed to participate. All were aged at least 18 years. Interview responses were entered into NVivo (Version 14), which facilitated analysis of the data to identify key themes. The findings emphasize the importance of diverse leadership fostering inclusivity, addressing health disparities, and promoting equitable decision making. The conclusion and recommendations highlight the use of decision making to build greater diversity, career advancement opportunities, and supportive and inclusive work environments while advocating for systemic change.
