Toward Ethical Potentiality: Conceptualizing Postcolonial Bildungsroman seeks to define and conceptualize the term "postcolonial bildungsroman" through examining the ways in which traditional bildung, closely associated with the Enlightenment ideals, has been challenged and transgressed in the representations of growth and development in the postcolonial spaces. I argue that postcolonial bildungsroman, distinct from the classical bildungsroman, could expand the horizons of bildung by providing alternatives to the classical version. Postcolonial bildungsroman is to testify that the dominant perception of ideal human development could not be attainable without the expense of the marginalized and less fortunate, such as the colonized, and thus should not be perceived as "ideal."In reevaluating contemporary novels that portray the development of postcolonial subjects, the project engages canonical studies of bildungsroman, including the works of Tobias Boes, Franco Morretti, and Jed Esty. Through close readings of Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions, George Lamming's In the Castle of My Skin, and Louise Erdrich's The Plague of Doves, I consider the ways in which postcolonial bildungsroman responds to the conventions of traditional bildungsroman, criticizes and redefines the notion of bildung. Drawing on Judith Butler's arguments about social ontology concerning "ungrievable lives" and Edward Said's "exiles," I try to capture the epistemic violence inherent in colonial ideologies and the protagonist's resistance against such violence to decolonize and develop. Distinct from the tonal tradition in music that embodies the typical pattern of the journey of Western hero, Said's "atonal counterpoint," which he considers characterizes "Exile's music," symbolizes the journey of postcolonial subjects, whose lives have been rendered precarious and ungrievable. I turn to Jean-Luc Nancy's conception of listening to examine the ways in which postcolonial bildungsroman portrays how its protagonists come to realize the impact of colonialism on their development and try to establish alternative bildung. I conclude that postcolonial bildungsroman-characterized by the "decentered" narrators who come to recognize the inherent interconnectedness among all human subjects and realize ethical potentiality available through "listening"-offers invitations to further consider the collective nature of human development.
