This study employs the research methods of digital humanities to investigate the trans-cultural genealogy of "sheng huo", i.e. how it became a frequent word from the late Qing to early Republic (late Qing to early Republic), and process of generation and evolution across cultures, knowledge, and social classes over thousand years of time. In order to explore the all encompassing meaning of the word "sheng huo " in modern Chinese and to provide a rich discussion of its genealogical path, this study will start with classical texts Mencius and The Collection of Laws of the Yuan Dynasty, to outline the mainstream Confucian discourse on "sheng huo", and the discourse on "sheng huo" of the common people which have been suppressed for thousands of years in traditional Chinese society. When the Scottish missionary Robert Morrison came to China, in order to preach to the Chinese people, "sheng huo" began to be incorporated into religious publications and Morrison's Chinese Dictionary (1815-1823). Later, other late Qing missionaries also connected "sheng huo" with contemporary knowledge of science, geography, arts, etc. Although this whole process was done in the social context of the Qing Dynasty and the colonists' dual apolitical and a cultural strategy, these missionaries' dictionaries, scientific writings, etc. were absorbed by elites and scholars in Japan.During the early Meiji period, "sheug huo" first appeared in government official documents, and then it became a new commonly used word in the mass media. It has helped form a quite unique phenomenon in the dictionaries of the era, showing the political and cultural context of Meiji, which was after the 1898 coup when Liang Qichao and a large number of students studied and published their works in Japan. These publications and their translations have connected "sheng huo" with a large number of Western political concepts and brought "sheng huo" back into political discourse. This is a key step in the beginning of popularization of "sheng huo". Since the beginning of the Republic of China, the social reform movement has been one after another. Politicians, scholars, writers and young students were involved in social and life reform campaigns and initiatives. By 1919, various social events and ideological trends broke out, and "sheng huo" also rose together, establishing its status with an all-encompassing meaning as a frequent word in the discourse of civil society. This research uses digital humanities research methods, joining the benefits of various digital databases to search and organize documents. This research will take into account both empirical and interpretative aspects, taking Foucault's genealogy as the lead, and digital humanities research methods as the base: long distance reading (distant reading) sorts out massive documents, combined with traditional text and close reading (close reading) to analyze the social context formed in different ages, cultures, and classes, in order to study the genealogy of "sheng huo".This is what distinguishes this research from traditional philological studies. Folk documents other than the authoritative classics also occupy a very important place in the understanding of common words. This study is also different from digital humanities research which tends to summarize a panoramic history that reflects a tendency of rational control. This research hopes to highlight the fact that history and real life are full of multiple, complex and contingent paths, which do not only break the discourse of political and cultural hegemony, but also open up the possibility of linguistic system that seems to be closed and operate on its own logic. Language and symbols are not just an intermediary for human beings to name everything in the world arbitrarily. Classics and authoritative figures that stood for thousands of years cannot monopolize all meanings and possible reference of a term. Compared with the mainstream keyword research in the past, focusing on translating Western vocabulary and concepts, this research on the commonly used word "sheng huo" treats all documents equally, whether it comes from classics or folks, East or West. Typical keyword research is looking for prototypical meaning, its translation and imitation, while frequent words study is exploring the multiple and mixed participation of language users in the context; keywords have specific directions of reference while frequent words study are driven by the rhizomic network. The "sheng huo" in modern Chinese society is precisely accumulated in different levels of culture, class, knowledge, etc., generating its almost all-encompassing meaning and rich discourse.
