The experience of coming out, i.e., revealing oneself as a homosexual to one or more persons in one or more contexts is understood to occur over the course of the lifetime of the gay individual and is not isolated as a singular developmental event. The advent of coming out is thought to be imbued with the experience of shame for the person who undertakes this endeavor; the shame of the coming out individual is conceived of as affectively experienced shame, i.e., shame that is tied to an acute emotional reaction in which the individual feels exposed, humiliated and debilitated by his revealed vulnerability. Moreover, the concept of "bypassed shame" is discussed in terms of the unconscious shame which occurs in persons who are party to the coming out event, typically the straight counterparts of the coming out gay individual. Bypassed shame is described as an affective experience which operates out of consciousness and is only otherwise identifiable by virtue of observed subtle changes in behavior that are linked to the potential threat to the bond between people. In short, shame is about the bond. Shame theory constitutes an area of thought that falls under the rubric of classic psychodynamic psychologies but whose roots emanate more from affect theory than classical drive theory. The potential for in depth clinical consideration of patient material is illustrated here with a discussion of an individual coming out narrative derived from an interview which investigates shame in the coming out experience. This discussion has limited itself to consideration of shame and the coming out gay man. Gay women are not expressly excluded from consideration in this material, rather, it is understood that the topic of shame and the coming out gay woman warrants independent investigation.
