The problem addressed in this study was the research gap in Black male veterans' transition to civilian employment. Black male veterans are continuing to struggle when transitioning to civilian employment. Those who have successfully transitioned presented unique perspectives on resilient factors and support, which encourages success in transitioning to civilian employment. This study examines these perspectives using resilience theory as the theoretical framework of application exemplified. The study also provides the definitive breakdown of resilience used, describes resilience as the challenge, and indicates that the presence of resilience contributes to the success of overcoming challenges. The research question, "How do black male veterans describe their experiences of resilience and support received during the transition to civilian employment?" used a generic qualitative inquiry using open-ended interview questions to get the description of resilience and supportive elements of Black male veterans. The interviews were conducted with 10 participants aged 28-40, who transitioned within the last two years and held employment positions for at least six months. The qualitative data were analyzed utilizing inductive analysis that yielded four themes: Unforeseen Circumstances, Success from multiple types of support, Opportunities to Achieve, and Necessity of Perseverance. The social change from this study will show that veterans' significant others should be provided with the same exit and transition counseling as veterans. Veterans and persons in consistent proximity, such as friends, family, and immediate supervisors, need to understand the associated risk factors and promotive factors that can encourage overcoming the challenges.
