This research, conducted at a private elementary school for learning disabled children, utilizes a single case study format to address two questions. First, is art therapy a viable modality for the treatment of ADHD when employed as one component of a multimodal treatment approach? Second, is individual or group art therapy more effective with ADHD students? Through quantitative research procedures, this work determines that both individual and group art therapy benefit the ADHD child. Neither form of therapy is superior but each offers its own unique therapeutic advantages. Individual art therapy allows the child to build a bond of trust with another human being, express personal issues and emotions, and prepares the child for participation in group art therapy. Interaction with peers in group art therapy challenges the ADHD child to develop improved social skills. Both forms of art therapy assist in the development of improved self esteem.
