English education is of intense interest in Korea, where the promise of fluency in English as a means of bringing social and material success to the family has caused what some have described as "English Fever" (Park, 2009). Korean parents' language ideologies significantly influence decisions and practices in their children's English education. Parents, when they can afford it, invest considerable sums in their children's early English education. An "English divide," separating the affluent who can afford special instruction in English from those who cannot, has developed, widening the significant gap between rich and poor in Korea. Some families have resorted to less (financially) costly measures, e.g., "goose fathers," who remain in Korea while the family studies overseas. Lacking the means to purchase better English skills, other Korean parents invest their own time and effort in children's language education through homeschooling ('Maternal English Education'). The purpose of this study is to describe the bilingual parenting trajectories of one Korean family raising their first child through a "English at home, Korean outside" strategy. This case study explores: 1) how parental language ideologies underpin family language policies; 2) how macro (socio-cultural) and micro (familial) factors are linked to their bilingual child-rearing; 3) how parents overcome the challenges of being non-native English speakers in providing instruction. Parental English language ideologies as a driving force of the family's strategy (i.e. "English-only" at home) and their influence on home language practices, are the main focus of analysis. The findings indicate that these Korean parents had strong beliefs that their children could benefit from fluent spoken English proficiency achieved through English-only home practices, and that these English skills would provide access to their children's material success. The subjects' (both trained as English teachers) attitudes toward English fluency were determined by the sociocultural environment (globalization, Korean government policies); family language policies also resulted from their experiences with English learning and teaching. Success in bilingual child-rearing relies on spousal supports, mutual cooperation of the family, and consistency in parenting along with familial factors (e.g. family structure, parents' language proficiency, child-parent relationships, child development). This study is valuable in revealing how parental language ideologies impact child-rearing and home language practice.
