This study examined bystander intention and behavior of male college students in relation to sexual assault on a college campus. Sexual assault is defined as "nonconsensual sexual activity obtained through force, threats, intoxications, or intimidation" (Koss et al., 2007, p. 359). Most sexual assault victims know the perpetrator. The bystander attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control were explored as these variables may determine intent to perform the prosocial intervening behavior. The study conceptualized the relationship between bystander intentions and behaviors within the framework of Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior, which proposes intentions to perform behaviors can be predicted from attitudes, and in the context of the ecological model (Kaiser & Gutscher, 2006). This quantitative study of mediation included six scales: Bystander Efficacy Scale (BES), Brief Intent to Help Scale (BIHS), Bystander Behavior Scale - Revised (BBS-R), Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale - Revised (IRMA-R), Social Desirability Scale (SDS-17), and the Peer Norms Scale (PNS). These were used to explore the connection between three independent variables (attitudes; IRMA-R), subjective norms (PNS), perceived control (BES & SDS-17); a mediating variable (bystander intentions; BIHS), and one dependent variable (bystander behavior; BBS-R). Participants (N = 254) recruited from Amazon's MTurk completed the assessments electronically via Qualtrics. Hypothesis testing indicated efficacy and peer norms were associated with bystander intentions when controlling for social desirability. When controlling for social desirability, rape myths were associated with behavior, however peer norms and self-efficacy were not as predicted. With respect to relationships with intervention, bystander efficacy was related to both the mediator and the dependent variable, standing out as a key variable in intervening. The mediating variable bystander intentions, as measured by the Intent to Help Scale, showed no significant effects on bystander behavior strongly suggesting no mediation.
