Years into the movement, the #MeToo hashtag has been used around the world to seek empathy and solidarity among survivors of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to assault. Additionally, through social media, activists have organized protests and other campaigns to shed light on this pandemic and call for societal and political change. Google's website, "MeToo rising," provides live analytical data on the usage of #MeToo around the world; noticeably, India and the US have been among the most active nations. With 8,000 miles in between these countries and a variety of cultural differences, this study seeks to identify ways in which cultural dimensions influence individuals' perceptions of #MeToo. Additionally, since this hashtag is used within social media, Indian and American residents' perceptions of social media activism are explored. Since #MeToo addresses sexual violence, rape culture and spiral of silence are also included in this analysis to examine the factors that lead to some to speak out and others to keep silent. Intersecting these diverse theories provides a rich interpretation of the results, including the implications and complexities of changing one's society to reduce sexual violence.
