The present study investigated the effects of audiences, who varied in dominance status, on the dominant basketball skills of a group of adolescent female basketball players. Twelve adolescent female basketball players were exposed to four separate audiences in order to measure two dominant basketball skills (layups and foul shots), to determine if audiences who varied on the two independent variables of sex and athletic status would significantly effect the performance of these adolescent female basketball performers. Each subject's performance was measured under the evaluation of the following audiences: (1) audiences composed of male athletes (MA), (2) audiences composed of female athletes (FA), (3) audiences composed of male nonathletes (MNA), and (4) audiences composed of female nonathletes (FNA). Each audience group consisted of five members. An analysis of the data revealed significant main effects for the variable of sex, showing statistically significant positive increases in performance when subjects were observed by audiences composed of male members when compared to audiences composed of female members. The data analysis also showed a statistically significant effect for the variable of athletic participation, this finding demonstrates that the subjects in this study exhibited increased positive performance when observed by audiences composed of members who were athletic when compared to conditions of audience observation by non-athletes. These findings are discussed in light of previous research and with suggestions for future research.
