Statistics show in spite of the social and legal changes resulting from the Civil Rights Movement, African-Americans when compared with whites, remain disadvantaged. Given the historical role of the black church in America, we might expect the black church to once again take leadership in addressing the problems faced by African-Americans. This dissertation is a case study of one contemporary black church which claims to be dedicated to solving the problems faced by African-Americans. This church is the African-American Catholic Congregation (AACC) established in 1989 by Archbishop G. Augustus Stallings. Stallings claims his church is a movement responding to racism in the Roman Catholic Church and American society in general. The research question which guided this study was: Is the AACC a social movement as Stallings so declares? The conceptual scheme used in this study was derived from social movement literature and applied to the AACC. Methodological techniques included observation over four years, unstructured interviews with church officials and lay people, the use of secondary sources reporting on the AACC and the administration of a questionnaire to members of Stallings' church in Washington DC. On the basis of the data analyzed, it is concluded the AACC is a social movement. The findings show the crystallization of a movement involving (1) feelings of fraternal deprivation, (2) system blame, (3) group consciousness and (4) belief in the efficacy of the AACC. These variables are identified in the literature as basic constituents of social movements. Although most members of the AACC are solidly middle class, the data show that respondents' (l) feel deprived when comparing black Americans with white Americans, (2) blame the system for this deprivation, (3) strongly identify with their own racial group with a strong desire to maximize institutional distance from whites and (4) express a strong belief in the ability of the AACC to improve social conditions for blacks and the self images of individual blacks. The findings suggest the black church in America can still be a positive force in the lives of African-Americans. The findings also lend support to writers who reject William J. Wilson's argument that the significance of race has declined for African-Americans. The respondents in this study are very much aware of race and the consequences of being black in America.
