Sonata form has a long history from the Baroque era to the present. Each period has displayed its own characteristics in its sonata forms. Increased inconsistency in the style of sonata forms became more noticeable after the Classical period, in particular following the death of Beethoven. This treatise will describe various sonata forms by post-Classical composers active between the 1830s to the 1850s, focusing on works by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms. The main aspect of the treatise is a study of what may be termed "deformed" structures of sonata form, referring to the first-movement form of the sonatas. This treatise uses the theoretical taxonomy of sonata form established by Hepokoski and Darcy in "Elements of Sonata Theory: Norms, Types, And Deformations In The Late Eighteenth-Century Sonata" (2006), and also refers to a psychological and retrospective way of interpretation developed by Nicholas Cook in "Musical Form and the Listener" (1987), both of which can be helpful to understand the varied sonata forms of the Romantics. The treatise will examine musical elements including harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, and structure. I will offer a few performance suggestions based on these elements. As composers continued to explore different options in form and in purpose for their sonatas after the Classical period, there have arisen criticisms and misunderstandings about whether or not they were successful. I will show that we must view sonata forms through new lenses in the Romantic period, including identifying hybrid models that incorporate elements of the Fantasy along with traditional sonatas that follow changing philosophies both in society and for individual composers. I believe that post-Classical composers have created very successful sonata-form works, and will show some of the ways in which they accomplished that. The ultimate purpose of this treatise is to highlight the value and legitimacy of Romantically altered sonata form even if it differs from the conventionally accepted Classical form.
