In just a few decades, iPads and other tablets, computers, and cell phones have become a driving force in the backbone of American society providing instantaneous access to vast amounts of information. These electronic devices have provided new and exciting ways of communicating thereby enabling people and businesses to expand their networks and families to keep in touch. Although the Internet offers an invaluable fountain of information and connection, it may contribute to creating disconnection, addiction, depression, and anxiety, especially within the family. This thesis uses heuristic and hermeneutic methodologies to show how the Internet affects relationships, connectedness, and detachment. Through this research, the intersection among attachment theory, addiction, dopamine, social media, and family dynamics is demonstrated by providing a gradual analysis of their clinical applicability in psychotherapy.
