This thesis aims to explore the nature of contemporary radical environmentalism. However, it is also a response to recent calls for rehabilitation of social movement literature's engagement with the contemporary radicalism, particularly with the 'movement of movements' against neoliberal globalization. Further, it is an effort by a member of those radical communities to develop usable knowledge for social change. In order to appropriately engage with radical communities, I develop a theoretical framework for locating their actions, goals and form that relies on activists' own words and behavior for guidance rather than attempting to fit their lives into preexisting models. The work of Antonio Gramsci stands out as particularly useful and fitting in this process. By situating his ideas alongside the work of Max Weber, I am able to distill a Gramscian perspective that offers a flexible theoretical vocabulary for discourse regarding modern power structures and exploring what their transformation or overthrow might entail. With the Gramscian perspective as a foundation, I develop a relational and network based approach to exploring radical environmentalism that focuses on DIY (Do-it-Yourself)/Punk networks as one element of the larger network-mass of the 'movement of movements.' Using responses from an anonymous survey conducted through DIY/Punk network ties, I develop a picture of a particular form of radical environmentalism that I call Radical Green Populism. Radical Green Populism is both praxis and theory formed at the intersection of numerous social movement histories, subcultures and contemporary environmental problems. I then step back to evaluate both the Radical Green Populism model and the Gramscian perspective, asking what they can offer in term of relevant, experience-based literature and usable knowledge for radicals. The thesis ends with numerous questions for both social movement scholars as well as contemporary radical communities.
