Secure messaging is a way for patients and providers to communicate privately and safely, through patient portals. Patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus have continual healthcare encounters and need for crucial self-management and communications needs. This makes secure messaging or portal access advantageous (Semere et al., 2019). "Previous qualitative work has pointed to ineffective patient-provider communication as one of the most prominent barriers to diabetes self-management" (Robinson et al., 2020). Caregivers and care recipients express interest in using health information technology to facilitate managing information and communicating with healthcare teams (Semere et al., 2019). Many clinical staff prefer secure messaging communication due to having better integrated workflow, ease of use, ability to communicate more efficiently and clearly, and improved workflow (Liu et al., 2019).While exchanging sensitive patient information, both parties involved should make sure this information is protected. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protects personal information and ensures confidentiality, integrity, and who may access and integrate pertinent information. It identifies and protects against anticipated threats to integrity and security and ensures compliance by a healthcare organization's workforce (Liu et al., 2019). MyChart is the Queen's Medical Center portal which uses secure web-based access for messaging, lab reviews, prescriptions, summary of medical history, and appointments to allow patients or their proxies to communicate with their provider (The Queen's Medical Center, 2022).
