The purpose of this research was to examine the intersection between social media and personal branding through the lens of the lived experience of individuals who are actively engaged in the process. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, a single research question was examined: What is the lived experience of social media content creators developing their personal brand using social media? A sample of 17 content creators was drawn from Instagram users; each was interviewed utilizing semi-structured interviews. Five themes emerged: Presentation of Identity, strategy of personal presentation, choice of social media platform, negotiation with social media algorithms, and interaction with the audience. Through the interactions between these experiences, individual personal brands emerged. This study concluded that personal branding on social media platforms is a process that involves factors that the individuals can control and others which they have limited control, thus personal branding is not a pure act of agency on behalf of the individual.
