The wealth gap has been a problem for centuries as financial inequality has been tracked since the 1800s and seen a steady incline (Turchin, 2013). The wealth gap has ballooned in the 21st century; three multibillionaires possess more wealth than 160 million people in the U.S. population, and 45% of new income is earned by 1% of the population (Sanders, 2022). The purpose of the study was to explore the wealth gap in the United States by identifying specific strategies credit unions use to reduce the wealth gap, as credit unions are committed to serving financially underserved households in their communities. This study used a qualitative approach through a case study design incorporating a critical theory lens. The research in this study examined the strategies of three credit unions located in different geographical areas of the United States. The target population was credit unions. There are over 5,000 credit unions within the United States; the research scope included three credit unions from the west, midwest, and southeastern regions. The purposive sampling for the study was based on the characteristics of the credit union locations in low-income areas. The data included (a) information from CEO interviews, (b) financial data stored on the National Credit Union Association website, and (c) physical artifacts. The interviews were analyzed to find themes and commonalities, which were referenced the research questions. Addressing the wealth gap and credit union strategies adds to the research in serving the financially underserved and the cooperative principles of the credit union industry.
