For those who have committed a sex offense, there is a risk of reoffending with a similar offense, or progressing to a more severe offense, such as a non-contact sex offender to a contact sex offender. This is a concern, but one area of research could be examining the risk factors that a sex offender could possess that could help predict if they will reoffend with a greater charge. This study attempts to differentiate between non-contact sexual reoffenders, contact recidivists, and only contact offenders through comparing static and dynamic risk factors of psychopathy traits, sexual violence, childhood trauma, substance abuse, and interpersonal difficulties. This study will use Macpherson's (2003) method of comparing these offenders. 29 sex offender evaluations were reviewed. The Sexual Violence Risk-20 (SVR-20) and the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) were completed by these chart reviews, as well as gaining the information related to the sex offender's substance abuse history, interpersonal relationships, and if there was any childhood trauma. Five separate ANCOVA data analysis were completed with the three types of offenses being the independent variables, the dependent variables are the sexual violence, psychopathy characteristics, substance abuse, interpersonal difficulties, and childhood trauma, and additional dependent variables and covariates being the non-risk predictor demographic of if the offender had children and the education level. The results showed that the contact recidivists had the highest PCL-R scores of the sexual reoffenders (but did not meet cut off criteria for psychopathic traits) as well as the highest scores for the SVR-20, and the only contact offenders and the contact recidivists had SVR-20 scores that would classify them as being a moderate risk for reoffending. There was statistical significance between trauma and the contact recidivists and trauma and contact only offenders; and there was statistical significance between interpersonal difficulties and offenses.
