Loneliness is the feeling that we are not cared for, valued or seen by those around us. More than half of New Yorkers report feeling lonely at least some of the time. We all feel this way at times, but persistent loneliness can have long-term and significant effects on your physical, emotional and mental health.It is important for us to name and talk about loneliness so that we can identify people who are lonely and provide them with the support that they need in order to feel more connected. It is not always easy to tell if someone is lonely. Some people may not want to admit that they are lonely or ask for help. They can seem happy while they are hurting on the inside.{A0}You can be surrounded by friends and family and still feel lonely. Alternatively, some people may be socially isolated but are comfortable with that lifestyle and do not feel chronic loneliness.Loneliness can affect your sleep, your overall well-being and your ability to take care of yourself. It may lead to depression, anxiety and suicide. There is statistical scientific support that loneliness can increase your risk of dementia, stroke and premature death. It may be as dangerous to our health as smoking and lack of physical activity.Loneliness is not New York's Illness; It's the status quo of city life. Given that Loneliness is a comprehensive urban structural issue, the operative action should be on the scale of the whole city by applying a systematic approach- a new layer of spiritual infrastructure in the city that serves everyone.The city's quintessential public infrastructure, a space of perpetual transience, will be transformed into a vessel for everlasting bonds. Located in Down-town Manhattan- Union square/Lower East Side, this prototypical in-between space, targeting the mental health of city dwellers, is healing and bonding connections.According to the research on the in-between, this space focuses on two dimensions: human and time. These dimensions express the overlap of different human activities, multi-usage and multi-functionality of a single space in order to produce a non-physical ambivalence concentrated on the human usage of space. Time is an invisible dimension of the in-between. It could be described directly using physical traditional elements, or indirectly by expressing the notion and spirituality of traditional places in a contemporary work. Also, it could appear through the mobility and temporality of elements, making the building flexible for spatial and functional changes according to the time.A slow voyage into time and space is introduced into this program. Also, the ambiguous boundary between private and public, and interior and exterior is amplified.During this journey, proximity between people is rethought and designed. Sometimes people are independent, sometimes connected, and this program rethinks the design and definition of public space to maximize the freedom of choice of users, who are the players on this journey. People who feel lonely seek a quiet retreat in the middle of a noisy city, or lonely people who want to meet friends among strangers will come here. The fast-paced inhabitants of the city will slow down and work together or enjoy a moment of peace and quiet on their own.{A0}
